Documentray photography is a form of photography often used in photojournalism. Documentary photography is used to portray a story or significant events through images. Documentary photography consists of a series of images that all relate to one another in some way or another. Emotions are often portrayed in documentary photography to support the story being told in the images.
Documenary Photography Moodboard
Miguel Candela
These photos are a series called Brothels: Living In The Dark. Miguel Candela shot these photos in Bangladesh in a Brothel were women and children as young as 12 are been forced to work as sex workers. Through the photos the story of these womens struggles and fears are being portrayed. There is a lot of emotion being captured in the photos and this is needed to tell their story. The pictures are very colourful especially in the clothes, however it contrasts with the dark and bleak background which is their home and where they are forced to work and live. Your eye is immediately drawn to the women and the emotions in the photo. Your eye then travells around the picture and you take in the conditions in which they live and work.
Experimentation Work
For this project I went into an enrichment class for year 7's. They were doing mosaic art work and I photographed the process of this. Even though I am not directly responding to my photographers work of photographing the lives of prostitutes, I did go into the mosaic class so that I could experience doing documentary photography. As it was in a normal class I didn't have the same resources that I would have had I been in the studio. However I had my ISO on 800, my aperture on f5.3 and my shutter speed at 1/60 to suit the settings that I was in. In this set of photos I wanted to tell the story of the children as they created their mosaic art peices. I wanted to start out with an empty classroom and then as the images progress more and more of the work is taking form.
After experimenting with documentary photography I have come to the conclusion that it may be something I develop further for my weird and wonderful project as I really like the fact that you can tell a story through the images. However I don't think it will play a main role in my work as the idea I have formed at the moment involves the photography to be more on the portrait side of things.
