Film

Film photography uses a camera that contains a roll of film instead of a memory card. Once the roll of film has been used, you remove it from the camera in a completely dark room. You then expose the roll to light and treat the roll with various chemicals to reveal the pictures on the film. Once that has been done you can the enlarge the pictures from the roll using an enlager and repeating the same process in which the roll of film was exposed.

Here the roll of film has been exposed and the images are now ready to be enlarged.

This is a picture that has been taken with a film camera. Most images that are taken with a film camera are usually black and white however if you choose to you can develop them in colour. This image is quite grainy and even though it isn't straight there is a lot of emotion in the picture. The picture gives of a sense of lonliness and longing, as if the flower longs to be outside in the nature rather than inside locked away from freedom. The photgrapher has used the rule of thirds when taking this picture which makes the image stronger.

My Film Images

When taking my film images I was given a film camera and a roll of film with a light sensitivity of 100 as I was taking most of my images outside. I then went around Nottingham and took pictures of things that I thought were weird and wonderful. It was very trial and error because I couldn't see how my pictures would turn out after I had taken them.

When it was time to expose my roll of film I had to remove it from the camera in the dark room with no light at all. I then exposed the roll of film to the light and treated it with chemicals. I then transferred the roll of film to light sensitive paper and did an exposure test on it to see how much time I should expose my enlarged photo to the light for.

I then enlarged one of my chosen images from the film using the enlarger. Using the results of my exposure test I exposed my enlarged image to the light and then treated it with chemicals. However due to the conditions in which i took the photo, the image didn't come out very good and I over-exposed the image when taking it.

After working with film cameras I have come to the conclusion that I won't be working with them further for my project as I feel the images are very trial and error and so it may take a lot longer to get some good images.
