Landscape Photography

Landscape photography shows parts of the world. It doesn’t usually include human activity in the images instead it just focuses on the land. . Some photographers believe that the city and man-made structures shouldn’t be classed as landscape and instead it should all just be what nature has formed. However, these types of pictures are still taken as landscapes.

The term “Urban Landscape” describes photographs that are taken of the city as a landscape and still include features such as buildings. There are three styles of landscape photography- Representational, impressionistic and abstract.

Representational- representational style pictures show the scenery at its most natural and realistic. No changes have been made to photograph on a software such as Photoshop.

Impressionistic- An impressionistic landscape photographer uses techniques that produce images that are more vague than representational images. They are a bit more unreal and some things may have been changed in the pictures in a software such as Photoshop.

Abstract- The natural things in the image are not easily recognisable as design is usually more important in an abstract image rather than making it look realistic.

Landscape Moodboard

Iain Sarjeant

Iain Sarjeant is a professional photographer based in the Scottish highlands. He likes to explore the unique light, land and way of life around him. Colour and form is a big part of Iain’s work. He is very drawn to ordinary places whether it be an urban setting or the countryside; he wants to find something interesting in a common place. Iain shoots for 4 agencies worldwide as well as supplying images for magazines, design agencies and other commercial and public clients. This set of pictures were taken near a pool. He used a black and white setting to make the shrubbery and plants stand out more over the water. Your eye is immediately drawn to the plants in the picture as there is a high contrast between that and the background. The shapes and patterns in the plants is also very interesting. There is a hazy mist over his photos which may have been created either through photoshop or because of the lighting on the morning when he took these photos.

Dav Thomas

Dav Thomas is a landscape photographer based in Sheffield, who mainly uses large and medium format film cameras. Based close to the Peak District National Park, Dav’s photography encaptures the nature of this varied landscape as well as those further away from home, including Scotland, North Yorkshire and North Wales.

Dav thinks landscape photography isn’t about place or location but more about mood and emotion. One of Dav’s aims is to portray the majesty of the light and weather and the quite solitude of the landscape. He looks for repetition and bold layering of colour and textures in the landscape as this forms strong visual compositions.

Dav changed from digital to film in 2007 and so he usually uses anything from a 35mm film camera to a larger format 4x5 however he occasionally uses a digital camera.

He likes to photograph trees and shrubbery . He has a lot of colour in his work usually greens and browns. There is also a lot of texture in his work as he is photographing nature so there is a lot of rough texture in the bark and smooth texture in the leaves. He uses soft lighting and there isn't a lot of contrast in his work.

Wollaton Park Photography Shoot

On Friday my photography class went to wollaton park to do a photography shoot. However due to the rain we were limited to the greenhouse when we got there. I took pictures of whatever i could find in the greenhouse that i thought looked interesting at the time. I used a Nikon D3000 to take all of my pictures.

This image is a grate in the floor of the greenhouse with a few leaves underneath. To take this image i lay down on the ground and took a very close shot. I had my ISO set to 400 as we were inside, otherwise i would have set it to 100 to get a less grainy image. My Aperture was set to f4.5 and my exposure time/shutter speed was 1/13. Next time i would try my iso on 100 and then compared the two images to see which one would have been better quality.

I like the composition of this image however i think more of it could have been in focus. my ISO was set to 400 however I should have tried setting it to 100 as we were outside. My Aperture was set to f5.6 and my exposure time/shutter speed was 1/100. the front bench should be in more focus compared to the rest of the benches.

I like this image because it shows the different patterns in the chairs and the table. I used an ISO of 400 as the picture was taken inside. My Aperture was set to f4.8 and my exposure time/shutter speed was 1/13. The picture would have been better if everything was in focus.

Landscape Response Work

For these responses I went to various different parks and then I took pictures which I thought related to my Landscape photographers.

This is my original image. For this image the ISO was 800, the aperture f20 and the shutter speed was 1/100. The photographer's images that I am responding to aren't as bright in the colours. So I need to do some development of the image on photoshop to make it more like my photographers images.

I went onto photoshop to make the image black and white as it seems as if this is more like what my photographers work is like. However I don't think this really looks like my photographers images and so I am going to go back on photoshop and do some further development.

I then went back onto photoshop with my original picture and instead adding a black and white layer, I added a sepia photo layer instead. I then decreased the saturation to wash out some of the colour, giving it more of a black and white effect without actually making it black and white. When I looked at the photographers image again, I could see that there was a hazy layer over the top of the image. So on photoshop I added a layer of colour over the top and then modified it until it looked more like a hazy layer. In the end I had created this image which I think looks more like the photographers work over all.

For this image my ISO was 800, the aperture was f5.6 and my shutter speed was 1/125 seconds. I then went on to photoshop and changed the image to black and white as well as the tones in the image so that it related to Dav Thomas's work.

I went onto photoshop and modified this response as I didn't think it looked like the photographers work the first time I modified the image. I changed the black and white layer to a sepia layer which looks like black and white but with a hint of colour. I then added another layer over the top and modified it until it looked like a hazy layer.

After experimenting with Landscape photography I have decided I probably won't explore it further for my project as it doesn't fit in with the idea that I have had. It could be something that makes a brief appearance in my work but it won't be my main focus.
