Weird And Wonderful

Statement of intent

For my project I want to explore the line between 'normal' and 'weird'. I want to show how society expects people to conform to a certain way of what they think is 'normal' but how everyone has a 'weird', crazy side to them. I will do this through portraiture and most of my work will be based in the studio. I will pick people who have a 'weird' hobby or interest such as dressing up. My inspiration for my shoots is coming from photographers such as Steve Schofield and John Stezaker.

John Stezaker

John Stezaker’s work examines relationships through photographic images Through his juxtapositions, he shows his own witty meanings. All of John Stezeaker's work is black and white and focused on the face of the person.

I chose John Stezaker as one of my photographers because I like the composition of his work and it is a method that I am going to explore and possibly adopt in my work. Instead of putting two images of different people together, I am going to try and juxtapose two images of the same person together, but in their different personas to create more of a contrast. I will do this to really explore and show the line between 'normal' and 'weird' through my work.

Steve Schofield

Steve Schofield shows the hobbies and interests of his subjects in their normal environment. He captures the subject in the costume of their hobbies/ interests in their day to day environment. He is showing 'normal' like minded people such as bank workers and teachers use fictional existence to escape the everyday.

I chose Steve Schofield as one of my photographers because I am interested in the meaning behind his images. I want to capture a similar meaning in my photographs of 'weird' and 'normal'. However, instead of photographing my subject in their costume in their everyday environment, I am going to capture my subject first in their everyday clothes, and after in their costume that represents their 'weird' side. As Steve Schofield does, I want to use costumes to emphasis the contrast between 'normal' and 'weird'.
